You asked:

Help! How can I combat noise in the hall when I need to study and sleep?

Living with lots of people can be loud, so sometimes you have to find a quieter place to study. If you can take music over chatter, put on your headphones and listen to something soothing. Noise-canceling earbuds can be pricey, but they eliminate a lot of the background sound. If you find any noise too distracting, an empty classroom or a picnic bench outside may make pleasant study spots. If the noise is unbearable when you’re trying to sleep, nicely asking your neighbors to quiet down works well most of the time. You can also turn to earplugs, a cheap and wonderful invention. They cut out a lot of noise when you need to focus, and they saved my sleep and my sanity many times when I lived with noisy night owls. Odd hours can be a good bet for study time or even napping in the dorms, so if you have a break between classes, chances are the dorm will be quiet.
