You asked:

Occasionally, I notice doors left open around my building. How can I protect myself and my possessions on campus?

It’s unfortunate that we have to think about safety on campus, but the reality is some campuses are open and anyone has easy access to them. To protect yourself from theft or worse …

  • Don’t prop outer doors, even just to go dump your trash. Someone who doesn’t belong in your building can get in through propped entrances, and vandalism or theft could result.

  • Don’t leave loot in plain sight. Have a spot to stash your jewelry, money and anything else of value.

  • Don’t hesitate to call an R.A. or campus police if anyone looks like he doesn’t belong in your building. A police officer on our campus tells the R.A.s that several years ago some residents and staff members all saw the same questionable people around campus, and no one thought to report it.

  • Do walk in pairs or groups when you’re out late at night. Better yet, have a friend pick you up or call a campus safety organization. I know of several campuses that have volunteers to give you a lift in the evenings so you don’t have to walk alone.

  • Do consider taking a self-defense course, or carry pepper spray. In the event that something does happen, it helps to be prepared.
  • Do be aware of what’s going on around you. If you see something that’s not right, let someone know. Look out for yourself and your friends so you can focus on enjoying your college experience.
