You asked:

My friends and I want to go away for spring break, but we can't afford a big vacation. Any suggestions?

You don't have to spend a fortune to cut loose from school and have a good time with friends. Yes, a real getaway will cost some money -- but here are nine ideas for doing spring break on a budget:

1.  Google “student airfare discounts.” You’ll get a whole list of sites with cheaper rates for college students.

2.  Plan early. Booking flights and hotels in advance will help you keep costs down.

3.  Go somewhere within driving distance. If you split the cost of gas, it will probably be cheaper than flying. Chances are there’s a cool place to hang out just a few hours from your campus, so Google that too.

4.  Visit Washington, D.C., or New York. Cold climates aren't as popular as warmer spring break destinations, so rates won’t be as crazy. Cities have lots within a small radius to keep you entertained, and public transportation is cheap and convenient. Plus, admission to many museums and attractions is free or discounted for students.

5.  Sign up for a service trip. Many church groups and charity organizations around campus plan group trips to help people in need. Generally, money is raised to supplement travel expenses, so it won’t cost you much. Join Habitat for Humanity and work close by, or head to Nicaragua to help improve the water systems. You’ll get away, see something different and make a difference.

6.  Turn your home into a vacation spot. In this economy, the staycation has become pretty popular. First, make it a rule not to think about school or work. Then detox by pouring yourself an ice-cold drink (don’t forget the paper drink umbrella), kicking back in a lawn chair and chilling to some reggae.

7.  Take a day trip. Or two or three. Make a list of sites near your hometown or campus that you’ve always wanted to check out. Absolutely need the beach? If there’s one you can drive to, load the car with a cooler, blanket and flying disc for a day of fun in the sun.

8.  Camping, anyone?
Even if you don’t want to hit a campground, you can grab some sleeping bags and pitch a tent in your yard. Light up the mini-grill, roast some weenies and marshmallows, and take turns telling ghost stories. Pass the bug spray.

9.  Have a sleepover. I don’t care how old you are! Bust out the Disney DVDs, coloring books and crayons, and remember what it felt like to not have homework and a job.
