You asked:

I landed this great summer internship, and I’m excited but nervous. How do I make a good impression as an intern on my first day on the job?

It’s definitely important to make a good impression as an intern -- it could lead to a permanent spot, but even if it doesn’t, you’ll need a supervisor to give you a good reference for future job searches. Not that I have all that much job experience myself, but here’s my best advice on beating the first-day jitters:

• Be punctual! Being late for your job, no matter how much traffic there was or how soft your alarm is, is unprofessional. Whether you’re working in food service or for the secret service, be on time. For a few extra points, show up early. You have all summer, or perhaps longer, to show your employer who you are, but don't start by demonstrating that you don't plan ahead well enough to get to work at post time. Set an alarm, set three alarms, leave way earlier than you need to … but don't be late.

• Dress the part. If you're working in an office setting, leave the jeans at home. One or two pairs of black slacks will go a long way. To save money, just buy a few bottoms (for this summer so far I've gone with a nice pair of pants and a pencil skirt) and change the look up with different shirts. That said, if you're a counselor at a summer camp, no need for formal attire, just try to keep it classy. Save the beach attire for the beach and make sure everything is well-covered.

• Do your research. Know your job description, who you report to and what is expected of you. There is usually a training period, but make sure you know everything you can before you get there. It also helps you feel more confident to know things like which public transit route to take and how long it takes you to get to work so you won't be late (see above).

• Don't be afraid to ask questions. When a question is legit, ask it. You will not seem dumb for not knowing -- you will come off as motivated for wanting to get things right. Don't wait to get it wrong before you ask.

• Be humble. Yes, you are totally awesome, and confidence is half the battle when making a first impression. But … you’re also an intern. Paid or not, you’re there to gain experience (OK, and to build your resume). The people you’re working for know their field, and you're there to learn, so respect that.

• Don't put too much pressure on yourself. It's your first day, and chances are the people you are working with realize they can't expect you to be down with everything right out of the gate. So breathe easy. Just do your best -- your quality of work will leave a good impression, for sure.
