Top 10 Sip-able Summer Snacks There’s no time like summer to kick back and relax with a refreshing, fruity drink. Here, we serve up the most satisfying summer snacks you can sip. (Don’t forget to B.Y.O. umbrella!)
Mojito Mocktail The traditional mojito is a widely popular Cuban drink -- the ideal combination of citrus, mint and fizz. For a daytime treat without the alcohol, throw some mint leaves, lime juice and sugar into a glass, then add sparkling water and ice to mix. Fruity-licious Smoothie There’s no better way to cool the summer heat than indulging in a slushy smoothie. From strawberry to blueberry to a mix of everything in between, whipping up a perfect smoothie is not only easy, but also impossible to screw up. Just mix ice, frozen or fresh fruit of your choice, and a little bit of cranberry juice or OJ in a blender, and voila! Poisoned Apple Juice Pour equal parts chilled sparkling apple cider and ginger ale into a glass, and add a cinnamon stick as a stirrer. Whether you’re celebrating a well-deserved internship or ringing in a good friend’s b-day, this celebratory summer drink is easy to make and even easier to drink down. Photo: @iStockphoto.com/woogies1 Mint-tea Tea To put a little twist on your traditional iced tea recipe, simply steep four tea bags in a 1- quart pot of boiled water for 20 minutes. Add 2 cups of sugar, and stir until it’s dissolved. Pour the tea into a pitcher filled with ice, and add in a few sprigs of mint leaves and thinly sliced lemon. Tea-lish! Cherry Fizz If Shirley Temples are for kids, this one is for college students looking for a kick. Using the traditional ingredients found in your favorite childhood drink, mix citrus soda and a dash of grenadine in a glass of ice -- but then add as little or as much Red Bull as you’d like. Don’t forget the maraschino cherries! Watermelon Cooler There’s nothing quite like fresh, juicy watermelon on a hot summer day, right? Puree chunks of seeded watermelon in a blender along with some ice, white grape juice, fresh-squeezed lime and a hint of sugar. Refreshing! Blueberry Bomb Put several scoops of vanilla ice cream in a blender, and then load it up with fresh or frozen blueberries. Frappe until smooth, then pour into glasses. Yep, it’s that simple. Want a little spice? Add a dash of ground ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg -- or all three. Strawberry Lemonade Change up your traditional summer lemonade by adding some fresh strawberries. Start by mixing up a batch of lemonade from frozen concentrate by following the directions on the can. Hull the strawberries and puree them in a blender until smooth. Mix the strawberry puree into the lemonade to taste, and stir until thoroughly mixed. Use whole strawberries as garnish by cutting slits in them and placing on the edge of drinking glasses. Ice-cold Melonade If lemonade isn’t quite your thing, then maybe melonade is more your speed. Toss cut-up chunks of summer melons, such as cantaloupe or honeydew, into a blender. Add ice, several splashes of cranberry juice and a dash of ground ginger. Drink up! Peachy Banana Smash Don’t put the blender away just yet! Throw some sliced banana, frozen peaches, vanilla yogurt and ice into the blender until it all mushes together into a slushy consistency. Pour into a glass, add a straw, and slurp. About the Author
