You asked:
I’m going crazy dealing with rules and restrictions while I’m home. How can I get my parents to let up?
As a student who has spent four college summers at home, I feel your pain. However, they are your parents and you’re in their house, so ultimately you do have to abide by the rules. That said, there are a few things you can do to make it easier for everyone to get along:
- Keep your parents in the know. At college, you probably don't have to tell anyone where you're going or with whom. But at home, if you give your parents a heads-up about your plans, they'll probably feel a lot better about it.
- Hang out with them. Spending a little time with your parents can go a long way. They miss you when you’re at school so if you’re spending all summer in your room or blowing them off to see your friends, they might put more of a stranglehold on you.
- Call if you’ll be late. Parents worry about you, and that’s just the way it is. So if they expect you home at midnight and you don’t roll in at exactly the stroke of 12 … well, they panic. So if you’re out and having a good time, just make a courtesy call.
- Show that you’re mature. Help around the house. Get to work on time every day. Bite your tongue when your little brother plucks your last nerve. If your parents see you demonstrating maturity, they’ll trust that you’re a good decision-maker and might loosen up a bit.
- Learn the art of negotiation. If they have a rule you just can’t bear, talk to them and offer up a compromise. Without losing your cool or throwing a temper tantrum, explain your position and ask if they’d be willing to meet you halfway.
- Be respectful. If you start lying or breaking every rule you don't like, they'll just tighten up the reins even more. Make an effort to respect their rules, and just remember: You'll have your freedom back soon!

Dear Internship Supervisor…
Here's what I really think of my summer internship: Thanks for all the "experience" and especially for teaching me the art of effective stapling. Invaluable.
